RESTORATION OF VINTAGE MIDGET Q5
THE BILL GOODE
GOLDEN FLEECE FALCON SPECIAL
The homemade dog box is mounted up to the engine plate.
The engine plate is redrilled to suit the Falcon engine. The spacer is machined up and fitted for the dog gear.
The transverse front spring, the front axle, the front shocks and the radius rods are mounted and adjusted.
The radiator is fitted.
The rear end is located by the radius rods and nerf bars and the tail is fitted up.
The re bearinged front hubs are fitted, the rear brake drums and hoses and the rear bars are fitted up for modifications. A splash of Golden Fleece yellow is put on tail to check colour.
A Falcon engine is refitted to the chassis for the first time in 30 odd years.
The Morris brake master cylinder is reconditioned and re mounted on the chassis rail. The front engine mountings are made and fitted.
The Morris Cowley steering box is refurbished and adjusted and fitted to the chassis. The dash panel and instruments are fitted up, The steering wheel is the one Gus McClure had fitted and is not of the original type, it will be replaced.
As there was no room for the Falcon water pump to be mounted, a grey motor Holden pump was mounted and re plumbed on the side of the engine. A 3" crankshaft pulley was made and fitted.
The original alloy race wheels were re surfaced on a computer controlled lathe and the car was lowered to the ground on all 4 once more.
A new front crash bar had to be made. This was bent cold around a suitable flowerpot in the yard and all joints were brazed. No lavish workshops here !
The exhaust system was hand made, brazed with silver nickel bronze to the head plate and gas welded on the pipes. It was a tight fit to go under the carburettors and to clear the chassis.
