VINTAGE MIDGET - Queensland # 5
the ex Bill Goode Golden Fleece
Falcon Special
I've retired from driving midgets.
This very historic and well known vintage midget is now -
Q5 is a very desirable midget, having excellent performance from it's 7 main bearing
6 cylinder Falcon power plant, brilliant handling from it's very flexible chassis and weights adjusted suspension and has probably been one of most run and shown vintage midgets in Australia over the last 10 years.
Q5 is an absolute pleasure to drive on track and is in a configuration as close to it's 1960 original, allowing for a few subtle changes to make it reliable for vintage demonstrations.
Q5 comes with a fully registered, easy load, custom built Classic Brand trailer with as new Yokohama S760 radial tyres and tows smoothly at any speed. Cockpit tonneau cover is included.
The now very efficient cooling system has been developed over a period of years.
The engine utilises a grey engine Holden water pump mounted remotely

The Falcon engine is fitted with o/s flat top pistons, a 30/70 Crow camshaft utilising anti pump up hydraulic valve lifters with Crow HD valve springs and a rare finned alloy valve cover. Engine runs comfortably at 5000 to 6000 rpm.
Methanol fuel is used and the std Falcon mechanical fuel pump is used as an air pump to pressurise the 40 ltr. steel fuel tank to 2.5 psi.
3 x 1 3/4 " SU carburettors are fitted to a Lynx manifold bolted to a 12 port 2 V cylinder head.
It runs a 7 psi closed system recovery cooling system and the distributor is fully advanced at 35 degrees with battery ignition.
The exhaust system is by a hand made extractor type manifold and runs into a 3 " i.d. open tailpipe. A tailpipe with muffler also comes with the package.
The drive line has been refined over the years to be super reliable and a hand made dog box runs to an enclosed drive shaft, to a 1932 Ford V8 rear end with a Bill Goode hand made quick change gear set up using A model 1st and 2nd gears for 1/4 mile tracks and a custom made 1/2 mile gear set for big tracks , made by Gear Power.

Q5 is painted in quality 2 pak paint and always looks superb on or off the track.

To read about some racing history:
Q5 was built in Qld. by Bill Goode, Qld.'s top driver of the era, in the 1960- 61 Speedway season, it won 5 feature races at the Brisbane Ekka, placed 2nd to Jeff Freeman in a 100 lapper at the Ekka, was placed 3rd in the 1962 Australian Grand Prix at the Sydney Showground Speedway to Bob Tattersall and Johnny Peers and had pole position for the 1963 race. It was the first Falcon engined midget to run on Australian Speedways and later as the Falcon unit proved unreliable it was fitted with a REPCO headed grey Holden engine. Q5 has been raced by Goode, Gus McClure and
Alex Walker.
